La iglesia original fue construida en el siglo XII .
La iglesia fue donada al arzobispo de Braga João Peculiar por Pedro Aurives y su esposa Gelvira Midiz el 12 de julio de 1161. En esta iglesia fue bautizado Francisco Sanches. La iglesia actual fue construida por el arzobispo Gaspar Bragança y está conectada con la Capilla de Coimbras. El santo patrón de la iglesia es Juan Bautista y fue aquí donde se originaron las grandes fiestas de San Juan de Braga .
