Die Provinz hat 4.223.545 Einwohner auf einer Fläche von 11.973 km². Sie grenzt im Norden an die Provinz Balıkesir, im Osten an Manisa und im Süden an Aydın. Das KFZ-Kennzeichen hat die Nummer 35.
Izmir ist seit 1984 eine Großstadt . Nach einer Verwaltungsreform 2014 sind alle Landkreise direkt dem Oberbürgermeister von Izmir unterstellt. Die ehemaligen Bürgermeister der Kommunen wurden auf den Rang eines Muhtars runtergestuft. Daher sind die 30 Landkreise gleichzeitig Stadtbezirke:
