Die Dakota war ab 1973 das Zuhause des ehemaligen Beatles John Lennon und war der Ort von Lennons Mord durch Mark David Chapman am 8. Dezember 1980. Im Jahr 2010 besitzt Lennons Frau und Witwe, Yoko Ono, weiterhin mehrere Wohnungen in dem Gebäude. Das Strawberry Fields-Denkmal wurde in Erinnerung an Lennon im Central Park direkt gegenüber von Central Park West angelegt.
