Situated on a rocky hill known as "El Castillejo" and "San Cristóbal hill", to the west of the town, its construction may date back to the Muslim period.
There is little information about this castle, and the available information is from the period immediately following the Christian conquest of the area by Pedro II of Aragon, "noting that this king successively handed it over to Pedro Fernández el Castellano and Pedro de Pomar".[1] In this regard, the chronicler of Teruel, Jaime Caruana López de Barreda, in his History of the province of Teruel, notes that in the year 1210, in his attempt to conquer the Moorish kingdom of Valencia, Pedro the Catholic established his headquarters in Teruel, "and with a strong army that included the troops of the Council of Teruel and the Community of Teruel, as well as those of Albarracín", he besieged Castielfabib and seized the area of the pre-Rincón de Ademuz and other surrounding places - an event that occurred on August 26, 1210 -,[2] encouraging the people of Teruel to continue the conquest: "And thus, under the command of Don Pedro de Pomar and upon returning from this expedition, Camarena de la Sierra was also conquered, already in the Javalambre mountains, bordering Valencia".[3] However, the Great Aragonese Encyclopedia states that "this castle was taken by Pedro del Pomar after the battle of the Matanza plain on July 29, 1210, while Pedro II reigned in Aragon".
