Hoheneich is located in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria between Gmünd and Schrems on the Braunaubach. The area of the market community covers 15.57 km². 57.19 percent of the area is forested. The name Hoheneich either refers to a "High Oak" or to a high-lying oak stand. The name of the small valley "Eichelgraben" proves that there used to be numerous oaks, and that around 1659 the church forest was a beautiful oak forest. Even in 1807, mighty centuries-old oaks stood there. Hoheneich has always been part of the rule of Kirchberg am Walde, which existed as early as the 12th century and was a fief of the lords of Kuenring. On January 28, 1345, a Niklas von Hoheneich was mentioned for the first time, who had exchanged a farm in Kirchberg with Albert von Kirchberg. Niklas belonged to the family of the lords of Kirchberg and named himself after his possession in Hoheneich. His castle was located on the Braunau, where later the Maierhof and the Hofmühle of the rule of Kirchberg were situated.
