Hopfgarten in Defereggen

Hopfgarten in Defereggen is a municipality with 680 inhabitants in the Lienz district in Tyrol, Austria. The municipality is located in the Lienz judicial district. Hopfgarten is at the entrance to the Defereggen Valley, which branches off from the Isel Valley and is traversed by the Schwarzach river. The municipal area includes the steep slopes of the Lasörling group to the north and the gentler slopes of the Villgratner mountains to the south. With an area of 73.17 km², Hopfgarten is the ninth largest municipality among the 33 municipalities in the Lienz district. The main town and the district of Dölach are located in the valley, and the settlement extends over several hamlets and farms above the valley on the sunny side. The lowest point in the municipality is found at around 870 m above sea level in the area of the Schwarzach gorge, while the highest peak is the Regenstein at 2891 m above sea level. Neighboring municipalities include Virgen and Matrei in East Tyrol to the north, Sankt Johann im Walde and Schlaiten to the east, Anras, Assling, and Außervillgraten to the south, and Sankt Veit in Defereggen to the west.
