Vienna is the capital of Austria and one of its nine federal states. It is located in the east of the state, near the border with Slovakia, along the banks of the Danube River. It is surrounded by the federal state of Lower Austria. With a population of 1,712,903 inhabitants, Vienna is the largest city and cultural and political center of Austria. The metropolitan area has 2.4 million inhabitants, a population similar to that of the city in 1914. The official language is German.
It is home to various companies and international institutions, including the OSCE, OPEC, and several United Nations agencies, as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency. Every year, on January 1st, the Vienna New Year's Concert is held there.
