Bleiburg (Slovene: Pliberk) is a small town in the south Austrian state of Carinthia (Koroška), south-east of Klagenfurt, in the district of Völkermarkt, some four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the border with Slovenia.
Bleiburg was the scene of a bloody event in World War II: the Beliburg massacre. On may 17, 1945, 45 000 fleeing fascists from Croatia were lynched here by Tito’s partizans. Croatia chose the side of Hitler.
Every year this massacre is remembered on May 17.
