Lindwurm Fountain

The Lindwurm Fountain in the New Square in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, dating from the 16th century, represents the landmark and its heraldic animal, a Lindwurm. The fountain was commissioned in 1583 by the city at the behest of the Carinthian estates. The work was long attributed to Ulrich and Andreas Vogelsang, but is likely the work of an unknown master. Chlorite schist, sourced from the nearby Kreuzbergl and also used in the construction of the Landhaus in Klagenfurt, was the material used. The Lindwurm was carved from a single block. The monumental sculpture depicts the creature with its mouth wide open, from which water flows, and wings folded back. The armor appears to be stamped, and its tail is skillfully curved. The stylistic language aims to depict the threatening nature of the creature. The style can be interpreted as both manneristic and harking back to the Romanesque.
