Aschach Castle on the Danube

Schloss Aschach an der Donau is located at the southern end of the municipality of Aschach an der Donau, in the Eferding district in the Upper Austrian Hausruckviertel, about 25 km west of Linz.
With the extinction of the Schaunberger in 1559, the lordship of Stauf and the toll in Aschach passed to Wolfgang von Liechtenstein, but inheritance disputes dragged on until 1572. In 1570, Wolfgang von Lichtenstein purchased the Neuhof near Aschach from the toll collector Hans von Miltenberg, as Burg Stauf had already “gone out of springs,” meaning it had burned down and was uninhabitable due to the lack of a well. From then on, the lordship was known as Stauff zu Aschach. In 1593, the lordship was sold to the Jörger, who began the expansion of Schloss Aschach in 1606. In 1622, the lordship, again through sale, came to the Harrach family, who retained ownership of Schloss Aschach until 1959. The next owner of Schloss Aschach was the Donaukraftwerk AG, which sold it in 1966 to OÖ Warenvermittlung. In 1987, the Gerstner family acquired the castle, which had been standing empty for many years and was in a dilapidated condition, and began its gradual, careful renovation.
