Following an initial indecisive battle, Andreas Hofer hesitates to launch a new attack on Innsbruck. However, the Austrian lieutenant colonel von Ertel, from the contingent provided by General Buol to Hofer, spends the following days surveying and studying the battlefield. On the 27th, he submits a plan to the Tyrolean leaders, which is examined by Speckbacher and then approved by Hofer.
According to a Tyrolean legend whose truth cannot be verified, an old man with a white beard is said to have appeared before Hofer, asking him to attack the Bavarians, promising him victory on the condition that it be offered to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and commemorated every year.
