A seguito di una prima battaglia indecisa, Andreas Hofer esita a lanciare un nuovo attacco su Innsbruck. Tuttavia, il tenente colonnello austriaco von Ertel, del contingente fornito dal generale Buol a Hofer, trascorre i giorni successivi a percorrere e studiare il campo di battaglia. Il 27, presenta un piano ai capi tirolesi, che viene esaminato da Speckbacher e poi approvato da Hofer.
Secondo una leggenda tirolese la cui veridicità non può essere verificata, un anziano con la barba bianca si sarebbe presentato davanti a Hofer, chiedendogli di attaccare i bavarese, promettendo la vittoria a condizione di offrirla al Sacro Cuore di Gesù e di commemorare ogni anno.
