Wildschönau Slate

Description

In the major part of the Alpbacher Valley or Alpbachertal you will find as rock the Wildschönau Slate, as here along this riverbed.

This type of stone is the product of sandy mud deposits that accumulated in ancient times (Ordovicium) in a deep sea and were compacted to form schistose rock. It exhibits few traces of life but many products of volcanic activity. It weathers quickly and prevents surface water from draining away. This rock is responsible for the rounded contours of the terrain, with lush meadows on the mountain slopes and darkling forests.
