Description by the author

This beautiful (sometimes busy) walk to the Zittauer Hütte is recommended for anyone with a good physical condition and is also child-friendly. The hut is located at 2,328 m above sea level in the Wildgerlostal (Zillertal Alps), near the idyllic Lower Gerlossee. It is open from early June to mid-October.
The car can be parked in the spacious parking lot at Alpengasthof Finkau (Oberkrimml 120), but an attentive parking attendant will ask you to pay 4 euros, of which you can get 2 euros back on return, provided that the parking ticket is handed over. In practice, however, the journey usually takes much longer than the parking attendant's working hours, so that it has already disappeared in the late afternoon. If necessary, you can still go to the inn itself.
For a round trip to the Zittauerhütte, it is best to expect a good six hours, including a short rest and photo breaks.
The first part of the tour takes you along a wide, winding gravel road through the Wildgerlos Valley, which is sometimes used by local farmers. The road follows the "Wild Gerlos", a fast-flowing mountain river, upstream. At the beginning of the tour, you can leave the street here and there to visit a "pulpit". This is a viewpoint from which you have beautiful views of the Leitenkammer Gorge, through which the river flows, a gorge with numerous waterfalls.
Once you have left the gorge behind you, you can enjoy the cows and the mountains around you and you get a wide view.
At the end of the gravel road you come across a material lift that has to supply the Zittauer. Here you leave the road and start a steep climb over rocky paths to the waterfall. The path is secured with ropes in the most dangerous places.
Once at the top, the hut comes into view and you will be rewarded with spectacular panoramas of the valley below you and on the Wildgerloskees.
You will then hike the remaining part to the hut over worn rocks formed by the strongly receding glacier.
The makers can - of course after a refreshment and a snack in the hut - possibly continue to the Roszkopf (2,845 m). This extension of the hike is worth it, but requires quite a bit of fitness. The total duration of the draw is almost 10 hours and more.
