We continue our walk, holding our breath. For it is here that the imposing Castle of the Counts of Flanders (Gravensteen) stands majestically. Nowhere else in the world will you find such an impressive fortress right in the middle of the city center. Anyone who comes to Ghent without visiting the Castle of the Counts, built in 1180, deserves the torture of the thumbscrew, the dungeon, or even the guillotine (last used in 1861). There is much to see inside.
When you look from the old courtyard of the count towards
the castle of the counts, you could almost forget that we are in the 21st century. But Ghent is a vibrant city, which has managed not only to preserve its historical heritage but is also firmly focused on the future. Evidence of this is the spider web, a witness to an international artistic event that, just like the fortress, has been placed there to defy the centuries.
