Town Hall of Ghent

You must go to the courtyards of the City Hall to admire the oldest above-ground preserved part of the late Gothic court house. This building was inaugurated on the last day of February 1483 in the presence of five-year-old Philip the Handsome. Under his son, Emperor Charles, the last Burgundian, an expansion began in 1519, including the flamboyant Gothic façade at the Hoogpoort, whose niches were filled with statues of the Counts of Flanders in the early twentieth century. Of the fifty-four planned statues, only nineteen were completed and our Burgundian dukes also shine through ... absence.

Also flamboyant Gothic, albeit slightly more hidden, is the chapel of the court of that Keure, which exercised the effective governance of the city, spanning with a net vault. On the stained glass windows there are images of Father Philip the Bold and son Jan without Fear, alongside their two Margaretha's.
