Flagey Square is one of the capital’s most emblematic squares, which was formed by draining one of the Maelbeek ponds. The square was named in honour of the former Mayor of Ixelles, Eugène Flagey, and is now an important crossroads in the east of the capital. Its most emblematic building is without a doubt the former Belgian National Broadcasting Institute (INR), an imposing Art Deco building designed by the Brussels-born architect Joseph Diongre. The international reputation of its studios, in particular Studio 4 with its exceptional acoustics, attracts prestigious artists and musicians from all over the world. Once the Radio Broadcasting Corporation left in 1974, the building was restored. Its current tenant is the Brussels cultural institution ‘Flagey’, which focuses on music and imagery.
