The old village of Ixelles, one of the 19 municipalities of Brussels, was once located here. The Maalbeek, which originates a little higher up around the Terkameren Abbey, formed natural ponds here in which the monks bred fish. Two of those ponds are still visible, the third has been filled in and transformed into this square. The Maalbeek itself has also been stopped underground. The beautiful building of the National Institute for Radio Broadcasting that broadcast from 1930 to 1960 is a listed Art-Deco building by architect Diongre and is nicknamed 'the Package Boat'.
