Cut off from its access driveway, the partly dilapidated castle of Heers lies in the greenery across the street. The castle was built on foundations from the 14th century and still shows some late Gothic features, but is otherwise of more recent origin.
Despite being protected since 1943, the castle of Heers has been deteriorating for years. It got so bad that at the end of 2004, the correctional court of Tongeren ruled that enough was enough. The noble owners, the Desmaisières brothers, were given eighteen months by the court to restore the castle. For each day of delay, they faced a fine of 200 euros. The brothers claimed to have no money for the restoration. Moreover, the castle has been in the possession of the Desmaisières family for more than two centuries. The Flemish government apparently has little confidence in the noble owners: it asked the Limburg Reconversion Company to look into whether the government can buy the castle together with private investors.
