The very rural Lissewege has been part of Bruges since the municipal mergers. The name of the village appears in the 11th century and may be derived from ''liswega'', the Celtic term for ''house of Liso''. This polder village is particularly notable today for the white-painted houses in the village center and, of course, for the shape of the tower of the Church of Our Lady. The original church was built in 1275, but after the Beggars set it on fire in 1568, it was restored in several phases throughout the 17th century.
Both works of art and church furnishings mainly date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Walram Romboudt (1598-1668), a sculptor whose house still stands in the village, was responsible for the pulpit, the choir loft, and the organ case. Willem Van Saeftinghe, the heroic brother on horseback, whom you undoubtedly know from the Battle of the Golden Spurs, came from the Abbey of Ter Doest. Only an impressive tithe barn from the 13th century remains of that Cistercian abbey. Next to the barn is a farm from the 17th century, now a restaurant.
