In 1949, the Pax Gate was built with the rubble of the first IJzertoren, which dated from 1929 and was largely destroyed in a bombing in 1946. That bombing was the work of unknown perpetrators. A cross was erected among the remnants of the old IJzertoren in tribute to the war heroes. The new IJzertoren is a design by Robert Van Averbeke, stands 84 meters tall, and was completed in 1964. Over the years, the IJzertoren has become a symbol of peace and Flemish emancipation.
