En 1949, la Paxpoort a été construite avec les décombres de la première tour de l'Yser, qui datait de 1929 et avait été en grande partie détruite lors d'une attaque à la bombe en 1946. Cette attaque avait été commise par des inconnus. Parmi les restes de l'ancienne tour de l'Yser, une croix a été érigée en hommage aux héros de guerre. La nouvelle tour de l'Yser est un design de Robert Van Averbeke, mesure 84 mètres de hauteur et a été achevée en 1964. La tour de l'Yser est devenue au fil des ans un symbole de paix et de l'émancipation flamande.
