The gate is part of the second city wall of Bruges from 1297. The current gate was built around 1400 by Jan van Oudenaerde, along with the Kruispoort and the Katelijnepoort. From 2011 to 2019, a museum illustrating the function of a medieval city gate was located in the gate building. From the terrace on the second floor, visitors had a view over Bruges and the surrounding countryside. After the renovation of the Gruuthuse Museum, which took over the museum role of the Gentpoort, the Gentpoort Museum was closed in early 2020. In 2021, the Royal Guides Association took up residence there.
