Gevaerts Noord is a nature reserve along the bank of the canal, in the valley of the Zuidleie. It is managed by the vzw Natuurpunt. Until the beginning of the 20th century, river vessels were towed by man or horse power. The previously constructed towpath in the canal embankment has eroded away in some places, resulting in steep banks, now a favorite breeding ground for kingfishers and sand martins.
