Poelaert Square

The Poelaertplein is a square in the center of Brussels, Belgium, close to the Louise Square and the Small Ring. It measures 150 by 50 meters—an area of 0.75 ha—and is therefore the largest square in the city. It is dominated by the Palace of Justice and was named after its architect, Joseph Poelaert. For the construction of the square, a large part of the former park and the gardens of the Herenhuis de Merode was cut off. Its location on the Galgenberg, in the upper city of Brussels, offers a wide panorama over the lower city of Brussels and municipalities in the northwest such as Koekelberg and Laeken. Andreas Vesalius would come there to collect bodies of executed persons for his anatomical research.
