The medieval world of Pieter Bladelin
Pieter Bladelin, a wealthy burgher of Bruges and a close friend of the Dukes of Burgundy, built an imposing castle around 1450 in the green creek area of East Flanders near the current Dutch border. It would be the beginning of Middelburg (now part of Maldegem). Thanks to the excavations at the former castle grounds (2003?2005), the rich history of Middelburg was uncovered.
To tell this story, the proud town has been given a visitor center. Numerous archaeological finds are exhibited here. They form the interesting thread of medieval life in Middelburg in general and of the castle in particular. Among other things, attention is paid to the Eighty Years' War, which did not leave the Zwin region alone. Furthermore, this permanent exhibition shows the evolution of the landscape well.
A digital visualization of the castle shows what the castle would have looked like in its heyday and decay. And the exciting short film The Bladelin Mystery playfully reveals the history of Middelburg-in-Flanders.
Once in Middelburg, you can take a historical walk along the cultural and landscape heritage that is still present. Information boards guide you through this.
