Tumulidreef

On September 30, 1982, a burnt-out Volkswagen Santana was found here. It had been stolen in Lembeek and was used to commit an armed robbery at the Rue de Bruxelles in Waver against arms dealer Daniël Dekaise. Officer Claude Haulotte, who happened to be on the scene, was shot dead. One of the robbers pushed the police car aside and fled with two accomplices in a Volkswagen Santana, heading towards Brussels. Two members of the local BOB pursued them in an R4. In Hoeilaart, the Santana got stuck in a traffic jam at a traffic light. The national police officers drove past the line of cars. As they passed the Santana, they were immediately fired upon. Both were seriously injured. The robbers continued their escape. The Santana was found burnt out a few hours later along the Tumulidreef, in the Sonian Forest. It had been set on fire, and moreover, the identification number had been ground off. Two weeks later, a cyclist discovered a lot of items in the immediate vicinity, including the contents of wallets stolen during the armed robbery at Dekaise and paper scraps from the Spanish newspaper El País, the license plate of the Santana cut into 23 pieces….
