Albert I Monument

The King Albert Monument was established at the initiative and with the support of the World War I veterans' associations. The banks of the Yser were chosen as the site to reflect the significant role the river played during this war. The memorial dates from 1938 and is designed by Julien de Ridder. The sculptor is Karel Aubroeck.

The monument is circular in shape and has a diameter of 30m. Twenty brick columns from the Yser valley support a ring beam with a circumference of 100m, above a cross-shaped terrace. Atop the ring beam is a walkway with orientation tables that provide a stunning view over the Yser plain.

The monument was thoroughly restored in 1973 - 1974. Every first Sunday in August, the National Tribute to His Majesty King Albert I and the heroes of the Yser is held here. On the occasion of the commemoration of the Great War, a new visitor center was built and arranged under the monument. In the interactive center 'Westfront Nieuwpoort', there is a permanent exhibition on the inundation, as well as an annual temporary exhibition.
