Scherpenheuvel is mainly known as a place of pilgrimage. The baroque Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel has been an important place of pilgrimage for Catholic believers since the sixteenth century. In 2005 it is the most visited pilgrimage site in Belgium. A small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary is venerated, which is said to be miraculous.
