Lamoral Count of Egmont is probably the most important figure in the history of Zottegem. He was lord of Zottegem and was one of the largest feudal landowners in the time of Charles V. On the orders of the Duke of Alba, the count was beheaded in 1568 because of his concerns about religious freedom. On the market you will find his statue. It is remarkable that there is an identical statue at barely 500 m. A little further is the Egmontmont castle.
Under the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption on the market is the burial vault of Egmont, where the remains and those of his wife Sabina of Bavaria are kept.
