Deurle, The Netherlands

Deurle is a part of the municipality of Sint-Martens-Latem south of Ghent in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Until 1977 it was an independent municipality. Deurle is located on the banks of the river Leie.

In Deurle you will find the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens with the art collection of Jules and Irma Dhondt-Dhaenens. The Museum Gust De Smet (in the artist's former home) and the Museum Leon De Smet are also located here. Furniture designer Maarten Van Severen built a kitchen pavilion for the twin Boxy brothers in the old garden (Villa Rustoord 1904) of painter Jenny Montigny, pupil and mistress of Leie painter Emile Claus.

The Sint-Aldegondis church in Deurle is made of brick and built in neoclassical style. Several well-known artists are buried in the cemetery, including Gust De Smet, Leon De Smet, Xavier De Cock, Albert Claeys, Piet Bekaert and Luc-Peter Crombé. And the writer Gaston Martens is also buried there.

The mill of Deurle has long since disappeared from the village scene. It was built around 1592 and stood on the highest point of the village, the Molenberg. In 1918 it was destroyed by the retreating German troops. Writer Cyriel Buysse bought the Molenberg from the last miller, Serafien De Baere. Buysse had a house built on stilts next to the refurbished mill, where he wrote many novels.
