Parc des Tchafornis, Engis

The "Parc des Tchafornis" is set up in an old quarry on the slope of the left bank of the Meuse in the center of Engis. Limestone was once extracted from the Frasnian (about 370 million years ago), which was used for building blocks and for the production of lime. At the entrance of the park, you can still see a lime kiln where the lime was burned. A path leads to the old working front at the top of the park. By cutting through a series of benches at an angle, this working front shows a very beautiful geological cross-section in which you can admire the characteristic fossils of the Frasnian coral reefs.

The numerous educational panels were developed by the laboratory for animal and human paleontology of the geology department at the University of Liège.
