Behind the small roof of the Gallows House, you can still see the remnants of the former pillory. Punishments of shame were very popular in the Middle Ages. They were mainly used to punish less serious crimes. Criminals were put on display, and the public had the opportunity to throw things at them and insult them. It was actually a bit like what we now call an 'interactive punishment.' The punishment was only worthwhile if the public participated. That's why pillories and stocks were usually set up in very busy places, such as markets or fairs.
