Is Schoten a village? Have you ever looked at the densely built center, the traffic, the number of banks and supermarkets? Have you ever paused to consider the growth of the population? Between 1800 and 1900, the population grew from 1,000 to about 4,000. Just after WWII, we had around 17,000 and today we have more than 34,000. More than 1 in 5 residents is younger than 20 and more than 1 in 5 is older than 65. Schoten has more residents than 'real cities' like Geraardsbergen, Blankenberge, Knokke, Lommel, Tongeren, ... And yet most residents of Schoten still refer to it as 'the Village'. They feel at home there. Perhaps not coincidentally, 'the Village' is also the name of the service center where you can recharge or take a break (accessible toilet) at the end of this walk.
