Fleurus

The area around Fleurus has been the scene of important battles in European history several times. And that is no coincidence. Here is an overview of the most significant battles near Fleurus:

• Battle of Fleurus (1622). Part of the Eighty Years' War (Dutch Revolt) and the Thirty Years' War. French troops fought against the Spanish armies.
• Battle of Fleurus (1690). During the Nine Years' War (1688–1697), French troops faced a coalition of European powers, including the Netherlands and the Holy Roman Empire.
• Battle of Fleurus (1794). During the French Revolutionary Wars, the French revolutionary armies defeated the Austrian army near Fleurus. This battle was of great importance for the consolidation of the French Republic in the region.
• Battle of Ligny (1815) (just south of Fleurus). During the Napoleonic Wars, two days before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon fought the Prussian army near Ligny, close to Fleurus. This was Napoleon's last victory.

But why was Fleurus chosen so often as a battleground?

1. Fleurus is located in the Hainaut region in Belgium, an area that has historically been a crossroads between Northwestern Europe and Southern Europe, and between various major power blocs such as France, the Habsburg Netherlands (later Austrian Netherlands), and later Belgium.
2. The area is close to important trade and military routes. Control over the Ardennes and towards Brussels/Paris:
3. Because Fleurus lies at the edge of the Ardennes, it is a gateway to the hill country and forms a logical defensive line or passage towards important cities like Mons, Namur, Brussels, and further towards Paris. Therefore, control over this area was militarily crucial.
4. The surrounding area offers open terrains suitable for large-scale battles while also providing natural barrier features such as rivers, hills, and forests that are essential for defensive positions and maneuvers.
5. The area has experienced changing dominion for centuries (Spaniards, Austrians, French, Dutch), and was a focal point in the struggle for hegemony in Europe. Battles in Fleurus were part of broader conflicts that turned Europe upside down.
