Did you know that most of present-day Hainaut lies on the territory of the former County of Hainaut? About half of the historic county was annexed by the French king Louis XIV and, together with the annexed part of the County of Flanders, formed the independent French province of Flanders. This province became the Nord department during the French Revolution.
