Grobbendonk is making headlines in 2024 with a chicken campaign. The municipal government of Grobbendonk is launching the project 'Happy with a healthy egg.' The residents of Grobbendonk and Bouwel can receive two chickens for free per address from the local government. The chickens should primarily be fed kitchen and organic waste, along with grains and water. They must be well cared for in a proper coop and kept for at least one year. Anyone wanting free chickens must sign a type of charter agreeing to adhere to these conditions.
The goal? Chickens are meant to help reduce the amount of organic waste. The eggs are a bonus.
"A chicken can consume about 50 kg of kitchen and garden waste annually," says Bartel Van Riet, who is supporting the project.
