In Roesbrugge there is a link with Marie Curie. American nurse Ellen La Motte mentioned Curie in her book The Wake of War, which was translated by Erwin Mortier. La Motte worked together with her compatriot Marie Borden, who had founded a hospital in Roesbrugge. Patients nicknamed it 'le petit paradis'. In her book, La Motte wrote about a radiologist who worked in the hospital in Roesbrugge: 'He was a wonderful radiographer and anatomist, and he worked accurately, with a beautiful, expensive machine, to him or to the field hospital donated by Madame Curie.'
