Zandwegemolen

The Zandwegemolen in Bruges is located on the Oude Oostendse Steenweg in the Sint-Pieters-op-den-Dijk district. The mill was built in 1860 and served as a corn and oil mill.
On 7 February 1860, the Board of Aldermen granted permission to Louis Matthys to erect a windmill on his property on the Zandweg. In 1932 the mill was thoroughly restored. On Thursday 7 September 1944, Jules Caene was surprised by a heavy storm while grinding. While turning, a strong gust of wind made it impossible for Jules Caene to stop the mill fast enough. This caused the axle head to break into three pieces. However, just after the Second World War, there was not enough money to repair the mill. Jules Caene then used a diesel engine to keep his mill running. He continued to play like this until the early 1960s.
