The fact that cycling is strong in Flanders is not really news and is also demonstrated by the statistics. According to a figure from the VAB, the number of bicycles in Flanders has grown by 1.7 million in the last 10 years. But there is still a lot to improve when commuting by bike. A figure from 2013 (source VAB) says that 17% of city dwellers use the bicycle for commuting. And only 7% of people who live rural.
The Federal Public Service Economy reported in 2011 that Belgium has 7 million bicycles, excluding bicycles for children. At that time, Flanders would have 5.34 million bicycles.
