The former hospital/pilgrim shelter , run by the Alexian Sisters (Margaret of Constantinople), was built here between 1260 and 1275.
After the French Revolution, the new neoclassical front building was constructed between 1872 and 1875 on the market square. Until 1889, it housed the butter scale, the weighing place for Tielt's renowned butter. The building served as the gendarmerie's main guardhouse, a justice of the peace court, and later as a school and work school. The city services moved into the building in 1875. The town hall also had a café/inn on the market square.
After the Second World War, a major restoration followed (including the side facade on Tramstraat). In 1997, the decision was made to renovate the town hall and expand it with a new building. In 2009, it was given its current appearance and the archives were expanded.
The entrance hall is impressive—you enter from Alexianenplein and see the monumental foyer. The interior also features paintings, old maps, busts of mayors, and a period room.
