Our Lady's Church

The origin of the church comes from a legend. Around 1242, the bishop of Tournai, Walter De Marvis, created the parish. Over the years, the place of worship underwent many modifications, but there is no charter regarding the origin of the true church.
On August 16, 1653, the church burned down after being struck by lightning. In 1860, it was struck by lightning for the second time and was almost completely destroyed by fire. On August 28, 1865, the new church was inaugurated by Monsignor Bracq.
The main curiosities of the church are the magnificent pulpit, the statue of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and the protected organ.
Every year, on the occasion of the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (September 8), the statue is carried during a procession. The faithful then walk in prayer from chapel to chapel, all decorated. This procession dates back to before 1400.
The organ was built by Jan Vergaert between 1868 and 1873 using parts inherited from the bankruptcy of the organ builder Van Peteghem. It was completely transformed by Mr. Loncke in 1951. Its case is entirely made of wood, covered with aluminum bronze. The pipes date from four different periods. In 1980, this organ was classified as a protected monument.
