Warande Park

Since the Middle Ages, the Warande has been located here, a vast and hilly animal park and hunting area, which belonged to the ducal palace, of which more will be said later. In the years 1770-1780, the terrain was leveled to some extent, and a walking park with straight avenues was created. Straight streets with more or less symmetrical, elegant, plastered white buildings were laid out around it. It was the first publicly accessible city park in the Netherlands, a trend that was brought over from Paris, Vienna, and London.

As you enter the park along the central avenue perpendicular to the Wetstraat, you will notice to the left, half hidden among the foliage, a modern building that is rumored to have been erected without a building permit. This is home to the national police department that controls the neutral zone, the extra secured area around Parliament and the Royal Palace.
