Buildings at the Grote Markt

The Grote Markt is surrounded by a number of historic buildings. At number 19, known as the Patria, we see a white monumental house with a protruding central section flanked from the first floor by columns with Ionic capitals. The columns support a beautifully detailed architrave with a cornice and balustrade. The panels above the windows are decorated with draperies and garlands of fruit.
Remarkable gable ends can be found at the two adjacent houses, which date from the 17th century. Across the street, the building at number 40, now a restaurant, has a narrow façade from 1770 topped with a decorative dormer with a round-arched window. Next to it, at number 41, stands the Hotel Damier with its rare 18th-century Rococo façade, featuring gilded lions as a crowning feature. They hold a chessboard.
