Lier was one of the first cities in Flanders, next to Ghent, Menen and Oudenaarde where beer was made with hops. We know for sure that this was the case before 1436 because sources from 1436 are found where it is indicated that the Leuven city council sent someone to Lier to know how to brew beer with hops. Already in the early 14th century, the brewing of beer with hops came into vogue. Although it was much more difficult to brew beer with hops, and the bitter taste was not always in the making, beer with hops was much easier to store, and could be sold in areas a little further away.
Hop beer was a hit. The following figures show this. In 1408, 75% of the proportion of beer consumed in Lier came from Haarlem. In 1475, the company's own hop beer accounted for 75.5% of beer consumption.
