The Great Templehof or the Commandery of Slijpe is one of the most important Templar excavations in Belgium. According to Christtian Stickx, the Templars played an important role in the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302. The Flemish Templar Knights chose to side with the Flemish municipalities and against the French king. However, the French Templars reluctantly aligned themselves with Philip the Fair. Not unreasonably, as a few years later, the French king would completely exterminate this order. It would be due to the information and influence of the Templars from Ypres that the French Templars ultimately did not enter the swamps of the Groeninghenkouter during the battle of the Golden Spurs.
