From this location, at house number 38, the Germans bombarded the cities of Poperinge, Veurne, and even Dunkirk with a "super cannon" between April 26, 1915, and August 9, 1915. The cannon, which could fire projectiles of 38 cm - a piece heavier than the more well-known "Big Berthas," was the first of its size to be deployed at the Yser front. It quickly earned the name "Long Max" due to its great range. Due to counter-bombardments, the cannon was soon put out of action, and the Germans responded by setting up a new "Long Max" in the vicinity of Koekelare - the Leugenboom battery. The only reminder of the presence of this cannon is the bed of the cannon, which currently serves as a water reservoir in the meadow of the local farmer living here.
