MAS (Museum at the Stream)

From the MAS you have an excellent view of the city. Did you know that on the site where the MAS stands, there used to be the monumental Hanzehuis or Oostershuis? And it was twice as large as the MAS. However, the Hanzehuis did not have a long life due to the Iconoclast Fury in 1566 and the subsequent disputes. Especially after the fall of Antwerp in 1585, many German merchants left Antwerp. The Hanzehuis lost its function as a trading post and served as a military barracks, military hospital, and even a Protestant church. From 1794, Napoleon took it over to house his soldiers. He also constructed the docks around it. (Willemdok and Bonapartedok). In 1880, the city became the owner of the Oostershuis or Hanzahuis and converted it into a gigantic grain warehouse. The complex was thoroughly renovated, but did not last long. In 1893, the Hanzehuis fell victim to a fierce fire. The destruction was so great that the house had to be demolished.
