The Moervaart

Description

The Moervaart (formerly called the Moere) was originally dug in the Middle Ages (around 1300) by the abbey of Boudelo, initially to improve the drainage of the Moervaart depression. In order to avoid the difficult to navigate Zuidlede for the transport of peat, which was extracted in this area, it was also made navigable in the 15th century. Due to the construction of the Ghent-Terneuzen canal in 1825, the connection was broken with the natural upper reaches: the Poekebeek (which rises in Tielt) and Oude or Hoge Kale, which originated in Sint-Joris, Beernem.
