Castle of Ingelmunster

The Castle of Ingelmunster, along with its domain, is located in Ingelmunster at the corner of Stationsstraat and Marktplein. The current classical castle of Ingelmunster was built on the foundations of a former stronghold. The Van Honsebrouck family is the owner. Ingelmunster is said to owe its name to the fact that Saint Amandus reportedly founded a monastery there in the 7th century. Robrecht I the Frisian, Count of Flanders, had a castle built near the Mandel around 1075. The ruins of the monastery were eagerly utilized. The strategic location of the stronghold by the Mandel and along the connecting road between Kortrijk and Bruges played a significant role in choosing the site of the castle. So important that it was sometimes referred to as the 'key to Flanders.'
